Japanese Shoji

Gavin S | Belmont Neighborhood, Charlottesville, VA

Our client, a single doctor, purchased a one-bedroom loft, in the highly desirable Belmont area of Charlottesville, which suited most of his needs.

However, this left him with no private space for overnight guests.

We designed and built 3’ x 11’ sliding panels, modeled after traditional Japanese shoji panels, a perfect accent to the modern design of the loft. Hard maple and translucent acrylic panels were used in place of more traditional wood and paper.

A state-of-the-art track system was used to support the considerable weight of the panels, and rare earth magnet were installed at the post to hold the panels shut, eliminating the need to break the clean lines of the panels with hardware.
